Malta Independence Day Display 21st September 2025

The Mediterranean island of Malta was granted independence from Britain on 21 September 1964. We happened to be on the island in 2025 for the celebration. Celebrations were held throughout the island but we were in Mdina-Rabat, the former capital of the island prior to 1530 when the Knights of St John of Rhodes took over the island and began construction of their massive fortified port of Valletta.

The moat and old gate of the old town Mdina.

Valletta is amazing but Mdina remains a charming and beautiful city.

In the centre of Mdina the Maltese Classic Car Club put on a fine display of classic military vehicles.

Of course, British vehicles predominate. Above is an Austin car and BSA motorcycle.

I think this was a Morris. We had a good chat with the owner (in uniform to the right). He was a former British serviceman who'd retired to Malta. There is a large expat community in Malta.

Malta has suffered through millennia of conflicts and is filled with amazing buildings, fortifications and museums. There will be more posts showcasing the island.
